This weekend I had the stomach flu.

I’m feeling much better today, but woke up to find the house had not fared as well during my “sick leave.”

I’m all for being honest…but I will not post any pictures of myself;)

However, here is a glimpse of how the girls took care of themselves:

I was initially confused by the array of items found on the kitchen floor, but the clues came together to reveal that cereal had been poured (empty box), milk spilled (mop on the floor in a clean up attempt) and the plastic container from one side of this plastic play scale was used as the bowl (shown below).

We had a familial post-flu clean up today and I admit to losing my temper more than once when “I’M SO TIRED!” (you’re so tired?) was thrown out in protest…but in the end we all survived and the house got somewhat back to normal.

What this weekend’s mess mostly revealed was that these two had a lot of fun while mama recovered…and a lot of fun together. It’s good to know that in the midst of sickness and dirt, two little sisters are sowing memories and forging a sweet friendship.

I was debating whether or not to begin posting today, in light of the occasion and the seriousness of the day, but the more I thought about it the more it made perfect sense.

Every year, we watch a short excerpt from Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech. Of course, my kids are small and would start losing interest halfway through if we didn’t watch the extremely condensed version but it gives us a good starting point for important conversation.

I felt like today was a significant day to post because I can’t imagine anything more messy than hate, and at the same time, the vision of Martin Luther King Jr. is so beautiful.

So today, the girls and I will sit down, watch, talk and reflect…at some point that is.

So far, I’ve only snapped (2343 times) at them to gather their laundry out of this lovely heap:

Aaaaand, as of 9am, I am still in pajamas and my husband’s tee shirt.

It All Started...

…With this post and a picture of my messy car:

I have been SO encouraged by the reaction and the solidarity displayed among people from all over the world. Not just mamas—Men, women, grandmothers, friends…all have spoken the same truth: Our lives are messy, and our lives are beautiful.

I’d like to start a revolution.

I’m inviting you in to my mess and asking you to share yours, so that we may be encouraged by the fact that we are not alone in our imperfection.

May we also celebrate the glory and the beauty that manages to pervade even in our weakest moments.

I’ll be posting the first entry sometime today, and then I’ll lay out the details and guidelines and begin taking submissions to post every week.

Welcome to Messy Monday, y’all!
